 Let's talk a little bit, in simple words, about the organismic theory in gestalt therapy. One of the revolutionary concepts of Gestalt therapy at the time it was conceived was to consider, directly and clearly, the human being as an organism with basic organismic needs for sleeping, eating, having companionship, making love, etc.

 

This gives two important clues. First, that we all have needs at each present moment in our lives that want to be covered. Secondly, the fact that we are organisms clarifies that we are in interdependency with our environment, since we definitely need it to cover our needs, and if we are not in it we cannot survive. By environment, we mean whatever surrounds our organism, the ground and the air that support us, the water, the plants that provide us food, our house, the objects we have in our house, the colors, the shapes, the temperature, other people and other living beings, like animals, insects and so on.

This may be a wise move as studies are showing that silence is much more important to your brains than you might think.

Therapy is a process during which the person brings his awareness where needed every moment. The ideal would be to bring the awareness in the here and now and be free from past stories and future worries, so one can focus on each moment whatever happens... For example, you’re aware that you are hungry, you see some cherries and you’d like to eat them. Or at one moment, you feel the need to stay alone and enjoy listening to music. Or you like someone, and you think to yourself, it would be nice to spend time with this person. Anything that you could become aware of in the present!
